group 11

The elements of group 11 (formerly called group Ib in North America and Ia in Europe) include the malleable metals copper, silver, gold and the recently discovered unununium (element 111). The first three of these elements comprise the so-called coinage metals. The coinage metals do not oxidize readily and exhibit a variety of oxidization states. Like the transition elements of the three preceding series, the coinage metals all form many complexes or coordination compounds. The atoms of the elements in group 11 have three valence electrons.
