Two things you might not know

  1. Mendeleev predicted it as ekaboron; Lars Fredrick Nilson found it in 1879 in the spectra of euxenite and gadolinite.
  2. Its aluminium alloys went into MiG-29 fighters, bicycle frames and baseball bats. Named for the Latin word for a northern European region.
