Two things you might not know
- Its first use was in the gas mantles of Carl Auer von Welsbach, who also invented the iron-bearing alloy used in lighter flints.
- Named for an asteroid discovered two years earlier; its oxide polishes glass, and it is the 25th most abundant element.
